Kill Procrastination – Tomorrow…

But first you need to commit to a life audit to forever change the way you do business. Will you share with me a few minutes of your precious time? I guarantee you’ll be glad you did. Today is a very special day. Today marks your last day of planning, to make sure that tomorrow is your first day of a new life that involves nothing but getting things done – on time, to a better standard than you could ever imagine.

Overwhelmed by desire? Unburdened by pressure, ready to commit to a ‘new you’ world order?

Get a pen. Get a piece of paper. And get these seven things done:

Write down everything that’s important to you

By important I mean the stuff that you want to get done. Forget about all the stuff you’ve done in the past that burdens you. I want you – from now on – to only focus on the things that matter. Because it’s the things that matter that make you happy, or make you money. Anything else is just ‘get by’ and there’s no room for that when you only have finite days to become the perfect you.

Write down the ‘doing things’ about everything that’s important to you

I just committed to this audit of goals myself. Here’s an example of what I wrote:

Show every available hour you have

Get another slice of paper and throw down how much time you have, on which days. Make plenty of space alongside the hours so you can add in what you’re planning to do, next.

Feed in what you want to do, when you want to do it

Think about your most creative times of day; the times when you simply need inspiration; and the times when you’re winding down. Match up the tasks and ambitions to the times best suited to them. I know I need to kill lethargy about 2pm on Tuesdays. So I figure that 2pm Tuesdays is when I’ll throw in some time to revisit my RSS feed marked ‘inspirational’ for blog post ideas; when I’ll go for a run; or when I’ll simply take a nap and head back to the computer in an hour. Keep getting bugged by emails? Section half an hour, twice a day, to catch up on communications.

Build in some space

Don’t have yourself worn out by Wednesday (you’ll see the nap option there, for good reason). Energise yourself with some luxury time a couple of slots a week. And don’t forget to schedule in those mandatory breaks for a drop of Optrex and a wedge of cake.

Get a whiteboard

Transfer all the brain food to a big space that you can hang and observe whenever you’re at your desk. Make a copy on your GCal. Have it so that wherever you are, you can always see what’s coming up next.

Stick to your schedule for four weeks

Rigidly, demandingly, committedly (even a word?!); doggedly. Throw all the BS about ‘regimentation is deleterious for creativity’ out your window for now. Leeching on a plan you’ve created yourself is the best way to make it happenstance. Once you’ve been doing it a while – and four weeks is a while in this context – you can be sure you’ve got the best chance of carrying your schedule through into the longer-term future. Use Egg Timer to help with your time management. And nail it.

See this is the king thing: once you start writing down doing words associated with goals, you’re already a step closer to achieving them.

Amazingly, I’ve finally figured a way I can become more organised. Everything starts to make sense. I have more time – I’ve even factored in an afternoon a week when I can go walking with the folks. A couple of hours each Sunday, I go deep cover and train myself ninja-style as a disciple of the beefy webcast. I plan the week’s menu Saturday morning; I network gladly and excitedly on Wednesday afternoons. Accounting gets done at 1pm on Fridays, and I review the week and plan the next at 4.
