“Pursuing False Idols”

Pursuing False Idols: Paintings based on materialism, capitalism and classism as they affect our social climate and mentality. This body of work examines images of pop culture that we all see as “success” and “happiness”.  Owning and wearing expensive brand names are often confused with showing your personal success, which at most times will not bring you happiness.  A series loosely based off a quote from Dave Ramsey ~ “We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t like.”  Throughout the Hip-Hop community, often misguided by material things and luxurious lifestyle, without having a complete understanding of our own financial priorities.

This body of work will exercise your self-consciousness and contradictions to think beyond our own insecurities. Pop culture is a tool to convince/sell and it’s for people to decipher what’s real and what’s being forced into our memory bank. What are we without brand names? What are we without social media? We all fall victim to contradictions.
